2019-07-19 07:19:02

SEO is not rockit signs, 91% of web sites get no search engine referrals ever, another 5% get less than 10 a month. Statistically you need 200 visitors to achieve a sale onine, I have some good news for you, that statistic is only valid for non targeted traffic. I personally have achieved far better results from fewer vistors.

If your web site is not a silent sales man, you need to try our FREE SEO AUDIT to see where your website falls short. As far as we know at Pretoria web designers, Imagimedia, this is the only FREE SEO test that does not require personal details to get the best results.
fixing common seo problems
In this blog we will be looking at the 5 most common SEO problems, in order of importance in our opinion. All 5 of these SEO issues occur on the web page code and can be fixed by a web designer. Some "web designers" however shouldn't be allowed any where near code.

Common SEO problem number 1: Title tag

Few websites don't have a title tag, many have made inefficient use of it. Every page on your web site should have an individual title tag. The title tag should include keywords and be descriptive of what the searcher can expect to find. "My business name Home" is probably the most common title tag we find.

It could be a lot more interesting than that. "My business name, suppliers of grommets and widgets in Pofadder" would be better, because as the searcher is reading the results on the serps, he knows that if he is looking for grommets or widgets in Pofadder he has found the site he is looking for.

The Title tag should be between 60 and 70 characters, because that is what the search engines use on the search results page.

Common SEO problem number 2: Meta Description tag

The meta description, like the title is used on the search engine results pages (SERPs), I have found more sites than I would believe that do not have a meta description tag in their headers. A meta description tag should be a unique description of each page on a website. Some sites that actually do have a meta description use the same text on every page of their web site.

A meta description should use keywords, be no more than 160 characters long and describe the page in terms that people will want to click through. The SERPs are more than likely the first interaction anyone that is searching for your business will have with it. A great title and met description give your link more chance of being clicked on.

If you don't know what link bait is yet, now is the time for me to tell you. You know on Facebook you see links that say, "This contestant colored in his horse and you won't believe what happened next". This type of link is more successful than something that says "This contestant died his horse for a competition". The second may be less spammy but will get fewer click throughs.

Use your meta description to attract click throughs, but make sure that the visitor finds what they expect.

Common SEO problem number 3: Insufficient content

The average web site achieving that much desired spot at number one of the organic SERPs has 1890 words on it. We get told that people don't read anymore but this is not true, people still read but they tend to scan over a page before deciding to read it.

You will have noticed this page has headers and some bolded text, making it easier to scan. We also have short paragraphs making it easier to read than great big blocks of text.

The fact is that if someone found your web page, the chances are that they are looking for information. To find information, some reading is required.
insufficient content for SEO
The better your information, the more trust you engender, the more trust you engender, the more likely the searcher is to read a second page. The longer a searcher spends on your web site, the more likely they are to become a customer.

The most important thing about copy is, make your's better than all of the web sites competing with yours.

Do you know how many words on on your web page, try our free tool and we'll count them for you.

I have seen pages with less than 150 words but I haven't seen them ranking for a long time.

Common SEO problem number 4: Images with no alt tags

Alt tags are used to describe images on your website, use the keywords in these descriptions. The search engines are largely text based interpreters, They are using AI to try and describe photos on some social media networks now, but the image name and alt tag help the search engines understand your content.

The easier your content is to understand the more likely you are to rise up the SERPs rankings. An image of a face is an image of a face, but an alt tag that says "Pretoria web designer, Guy McLaren" makes it easier to index. Describing the widget or grommet in words that people are using to search for your business or product can improve your search results.
No alt tags on images
It is easier to rank in the images at times than in the web page results. I have received leads because my images ranked well and led people to my web site. The goal is visitors that want your product or services make it easy to find them.

Common SEO problem number 5: Not having a mobile version of your web page

Google has a mobile first policy in place because more than 50% of all web searches are now being done on mobile devices. If your web site is not mobile ready and your competitions is, you will rank lower on the SERPs. It's that simple.

Responsive web design allows your website to be optimised for any and all platforms with just a little extra code. If you are on a PC you can test this site or you can use our SEO testing tool to find out if your page uses responsive web design. If you are on a pc or laptop, you can watch this site change as you reduce the size of the window.

Undock it from the screen and using your mouse grab one side and reduce it. You will see the changes as you reduce it in size. Responsive web design gives you a site for every device being used to connect to the web, from the smallest mobile screen to a large screen TV.

Common SEO problem number 6: Having duplicate content on your web site

It is amazing how many websites are just a copy of another web site. Instead of creating authoritative content of their own, people will just copy content from another web site. They will place a copy of content from their suppliers, a competitor or a web site they found in another country selling the same widgets and grommets.

Common SEO problem number 6: Having duplicate content on your web site

At Imagimedia, Pretoria web design company, we will not just copy and paste anything. Our content is all unique and we guarantee that no one will be able to make a copyright claim on anything we create. Google will actively punish web sites for duplicate content. The most authoritative web site will win every time. Websites with stolen content only win in the short term.

Content is king, and good content is always valued by the search engines, I create a separate page for any and all keyword phrases I want to try and compete for. Try and guess what I am trying to get results for with this blog post. I often use other web sites for inspiration, but will never copy their content, because I want my content to be better.

Having the best content, gets you better results. Remove all duplicate content from your web site. When adding your web site to third party indexes and web pages, never just copy stuff from your web site. Create new content every time, you want them to rank well, but never better than your own web site.

Common SEO problems: Round up

If you fix just these 5 problems your web site will already be better than most, Of course there are other common SEO problems, which I will write about in an upcoming blog post.
